  I’m a member of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians and the Tututni Band of Indians, as well as a descendent from the Southern Cheyenne and Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians. I’m proud of my Native American identity and after coming to Google as a Test Engineer in 2010, I joined the Google American Indian Network—an employee group passionate about Native American communities—to meet other Native people at Google. Since then, I’ve been able to connect with other Googlers to celebrate the diverse range of tribal cultures and communities across the country.

  
  

  This Native American History Month, we’re highlighting the story of Robin Máxkii in the latest episode of “Search On,” Google’s original documentary series. When Robin was a teenager, she felt caught between worlds—her reservation in Wisconsin, and the urban sprawl of Houston. From organizing hackathons for the American Indian Science and Engineering Society to becoming a mentor for Google’s Made with Code program, Robin is carving her own path as a Native person in STEM and is bringing her community along with her.

  
  

  Today’s Doodle honors another powerful Native American woman: Eastern Band Cherokee Indian woodcarver and educator Amanda Crowe, a prolific artist renowned for her expressive animal figures. Led by Doodler Lydia Nichols, the Doodle was created in collaboration with the Qualla Arts & Crafts Mutual as well as William “Bill” H. Crowe, Jr., woodcarver and nephew and former student of Amanda Crowe.

  There are a few other ways we’re celebrating Native American History at Google: When you say “Hey Google, how do you celebrate Native American Heritage Month?” your Google Assistant will tell you a fact about Native American history and culture. Try telling it “Hey, Google, Happy Native American Heritage Month” as well.

  
  

  On November 17th, Google volunteers will be working alongside the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian to facilitate an educator training day in Oklahoma City.

  
  

  And through Google’s CS First program, we’ll be working with local teachers to strengthen computer science in Native classrooms and to inspire and promote the improvement of teaching and learning about Native American history through NMAI’s Native Knowledge 360°.

  
  

  The concept of walking in two worlds is one with which many can identify. At Google, I’ve brought my two worlds closer together, and I’m proud of the work we’ve done to share the experiences of Native American people with others.

  This is the third post in a series about Display & Video 360 innovations.

  Display & Video 360 is organized around five integrated modules that work together to simplify the end-to-end campaign process: Campaigns, Audiences, Creatives, Inventory and Insights. Today we’ll explore new features of the Creatives module, where you can design, produce and manage all of your ads.

  Give creative a seat at the table

  Great ads are born when the creative, data, and media teams align on what to say and how to say it. This is why we are so excited about Creative Workspace — the foundation of the Creatives module in Display & Video 360. For the first time, creative teams can work on custom rich media and data-driven creative in the same interface as media and data teams.

  

  The welcome page of Creative Workspace gives you access to all your creative assets.

  With the Creative Workspace, you can invite creative teams to collaborate with other teams in Display & Video 360 using two new roles. First, you can add a creative admin, which is usually a producer or creative agency lead. The admin can then invite other creative team members, such as producers, designers, developers, art directors, and copywriters, and manage their access as creative users.

  
  

  The creative user role allows you to share relevant insights with creative agencies, while keeping some of the more sensitive data like fees and media prices for just those who need it. This allows creatives to build more tailored ad experiences as the media plan gets developed. At the same time, creative teams can easily preview formats, designs and strategies with media teams as they are being developed, so they can get early feedback and ensure there is alignment.

  
  

  Build better data-driven creative in Display & Video 360

  Designers and developers can build custom, data-driven creatives directly in the Creative Workspace using the new Ad Canvas — a visual workflow for dynamic ad creation.

  

  The Ad Canvas lets you build data-driven creatives at scale.

  Data-driven creatives are ads that tailor the look and feel of an ad based on specific signals such as time of day or audience — and research shows that programmatic campaigns using data-driven creative often perform better than those that do not. We recently expanded the types  of signals available to customize ads to also include Affinity and In Market audiences created by Google. With these options, your team can now reach consumers who are likely to have a particular interest with a more relevant message. Ad Canvas also integrates with Google Web Designer, which helps your creative team manage custom designs, speed up data-driven setups, and truly scale their creative development.

  Design beautiful ads at scale

  Enabling collaboration in the creative development process and supporting customization are important steps towards delivering effective ads, but the actual ad experience that you deliver to your consumers is critical to success. That’s why we’re also introducing new mobile ad formats that are optimized for an environment where people engage by touch.

  
  

  First, we’ve recently introduced Flipbook, a video ad format that plays only when the ad is visible and the user is scrolling, which ensures the ad doesn't compromise other content and gives users full control. Flipbook piques the user’s interest by pairing the video playback with scrolling action, creating a sight and motion experience that works both forward and in reverse.

  
  

  It’s incredibly fast to build a Flipbook ad — all your team needs is a video file, a brand logo and a call to action. Your creative team brings the idea along with a few simple assets, and we bring the technology to achieve this effect out of the box, complete with embedded measurement and ability to deploy at scale.

  Second, we have also recently introduced Parallax, a scroll-based display experience built in Google Web Designer. Parallax creates a perception of depth, which comes from having multiple images move at slightly different speeds, all triggered by the user’s scroll. Parallax ads can be built with any number of layers to create simple background and foreground experiences or complex, rich experiences that appear as 3D views. Creative teams can easily customize these ads to work for their needs.

  Over time, we’ll introduce more formats like these, to help you build beautiful, relevant ads that deliver a great experience for users, especially on mobile.   It’s the holiday season and that means two things: shiny new devices and lots of apps for getting things done! There will be more people taking valuable actions and more opportunities for you to be there when people are looking. According to Adjust, people who install apps in December complete twice as many in-app actions—like buying a gift or beating the first level of a game—within 24 hours.

  Universal App campaignshelp you show your apps to these users wherever they are—Google.com, Google Play, YouTube, and over 3 million sites and apps in the Google Display Network. Today, we’re sharing new insights and best practices to help you make the most of your app campaigns this holiday season.
  

  Get your timing right

  It’s important to reach consumers when they’re interested in discovering and engaging with new apps. But many marketers get their timing wrong, even during the most important time of the year.

  Take Black Friday as an example—Singular found that installs peak during the week of Thanksgiving. However, many app marketers jump the gun—marketing activities peak 10 days before Black Friday, dropping about 30% on the actual holiday weekend.

  So don’t leave consumers out in the cold when they’re knocking! Get your timing right this season and ensure your campaigns are live during peak periods. To learn more about how to succeed with Google App ads, check out our best practices.

  
  

  Capture consumers’ attention

  People turn to apps for inspiration when they’re in-market for gifts. In the U.S., AppsFlyer found that 12% more people spend money in apps in November and December compared to any other time of the year.

  For eBay, holiday campaigns are all about finding consumers that want to complete their shopping with ease. And they’ve found videos to be a great way to win the attention of shoppers who are researching and ready to take action: “The scalable video format allows us to seamlessly highlight eBay’s value proposition of massive selection, fast and free shipping and best value,” says Sadie Daryan, Global Head of Display and App Marketing at eBay.

  For eBay and other brands, video ads on Universal App campaigns have driven 14B in-app actions over the last 12 months.¹ To improve performance, we recommend adding both portrait and landscape videos to help increase your chances of showing the most relevant ad.

YouTube’s AutoDirector feature automatically generates personalized portrait and landscape videos for your campaign using existing assets like images, text and ratings from your app store listing.   Prepare for success

  Data is your best friend as you prepare for your holiday push, helping you make informed decisions as to when to run campaigns and how to optimize your ad assets. To get a more complete picture of how your holiday ads are working, remember that ads can drive results even if users don’t click on them.

  That’s why we recently introduced view-through conversion reporting for App campaigns—to help you determine which viewable ad impressions were associated with conversions.

  These new insights helped InnoGames to better understand its valuable players. According to Felix Janzen, Director Performance Marketing at InnoGames, “View-through conversions help InnoGames and our analytics team analyze the full picture of the conversion funnel and attribute the right value to the actions of the user.”

  After enabling view-through conversion reporting, InnoGames saw a 12% uplift in transactions and adjusted its bid strategy to reach even more players likely to make purchases.

  Editor’s note: Today, our CEO Sundar Pichai sent an email to Google employees about changes we’re making to better support them. You can read the note in its entirety below.

  Hi everyone,

  At Google we try hard to build a workplace that supports our employees and empowers them to do their best work. As CEO, I take this responsibility very seriously and I’m committed to making the changes we need to improve. Over the past few weeks Google’s leaders and I have heard your feedback and have been moved by the stories you’ve shared.

  We recognize that we have not always gotten everything right in the past and we are sincerely sorry for that. It’s clear we need to make some changes.

  Going forward, we will provide more transparency on how we handle concerns. We’ll give better support and care to the people who raise them. And we will double down on our commitment to be a representative, equitable, and respectful workplace.

  Today, we’re announcing a comprehensive action plan to make progress. It’s detailed here and I encourage everyone to read it. Here are some of the key changes:

  • We will make arbitration optional for individual sexual harassment and sexual assault claims. Google has never required confidentiality in the arbitration process and arbitration still may be the best path for a number of reasons (e.g. personal privacy) but, we recognize that choice should be up to you. 
    
  • We will provide more granularity around sexual harassment investigations and outcomes at the company as part of our Investigations Report.
    
  • We’re revamping the way we handle and look into your concerns in three ways: We’re overhauling our reporting channels by bringing them together on one dedicated site and including live support. We will enhance the processes we use to handle concerns—including the ability for Googlers to be accompanied by a support person. And we will offer extra care and resources for Googlers during and after the process. This includes extended counseling and career support,
    
  • We will update and expand our mandatory sexual harassment training. From now on if you don’t complete your training, you’ll receive a one-rating dock in Perf (editor's note: Perf is our performance review system). 
    
  • We will recommit to our company-wide OKR around diversity, equity and inclusion again in 2019, focused on improving representation—through hiring, progression and retention—and creating a more inclusive culture for everyone. Our Chief Diversity Officer will continue to provide monthly progress updates to me and my leadership team. 

  I hope you’ll take the time to read the full range of actions we’re announcing today.

  
  

  Thank you all for the feedback you’ve shared with us. This is an area where we need to continually make progress and are committed to doing so. We often hear from Googlers that the best part of working here is other Googlers. Even in difficult times, we are encouraged by the commitment of our colleagues to create a better workplace. Files Go was built to solve file and storage management problems for the next generation of smartphone users in countries such as India, Brazil and Nigeria. It helped people make the most of limited phone storage, enjoy their favorite videos and music, and send apps to each other at blazing speeds without using mobile data.

  In less than a year, Files Go has grown tremendously to serve over 30 million monthly users. We’ve noticed that people across the globe are using it, no matter what type of mobile phone they have or how fast their internet connection is.   Let me start out by introducing myself: my name is Lonnie Bedwell and I’m from Pleasantville, Indiana, population 120. I’ve been blessed with a full and amazing life—raising three daughters as a single father, serving in the U.S. Navy, and perfecting my chicken noodle soup recipe.

  
  

  I lost my vision over two decades ago, and was frustrated by how little people come to expect out of a blind person. Fortunately, I benefited from a tight community who supported and challenged me to learn more and do more. Since then, I’ve pushed myself mentally and physically—from climbing and mountain biking to writing a book to dancing with my daughter at her wedding.

  
  

  I believe we can’t abandon our sense of adventure because we lose our ability to see it, and it has become  my goal to help people who live with similar challenges, and show them that anything is possible. In 2013, I became the first blind person to kayak the entire 226 miles of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon But, I always felt it didn’t mean anything unless I found a way to pay it forward. So I joined up with the good folks at Team River Runner, a nonprofit dedicated to providing all veterans and their families an opportunity to find health, healing, community, and  purpose. Together we had the audacious goal to support four other blind veterans take a trip down the Grand Canyon.

  Google was keen to support our wild idea of a journey by capturing our exploration in 360 degree Street View. Each member of this journey felt strongly that we must share our experience to inspire and invigorate others—and Street View is a far-reaching platform that can be accessed by anyone, anytime, and from anyplace.    

  
  

  A question I often get is “How do blind people kayak the Grand Canyon?” Well, it starts with grit. And a lot of preparation. Our other visually-impaired team members—Steve Baskis, Kathy Champion,Brian Harris, and Travis Fugate—practiced hundreds of rolls (flipping yourself back up if you go underwater) and ramped up on big rivers all around the country to prepare. From there, it was all about teamwork and trust.  Team River Runner pioneered a system in which a guide in front makes a homing noise that the blind kayaker then follows, as you can experience for yourself in this 360 video. Just like we relied on our squadin the military, we relied on each other out there in our kayaks.  Our deployments in Afghanistan or Iraq reinforced our ability to work together and survive as a group, which came to life again on this river.

  Every single person challenged and pushed themselves on a daily basis. When the earthy warmth of the desert day cooled during the starry nights, delicious cooking smells filled the air, and sounds of music and laughter replaced the roar of the whitewater. I’ll never forget how I felt our last night in the Canyon—so humbled by our team and their devotion to each other. I mean, very few people ever kayak the Grand Canyon, let alone five blind people! We reveled at how far we had come together, but most importantly, how far we could go if set our minds to it.  We may have lost our sight, but we didn’t lose our vision.

  While we no longer have the ability to see, we still have the power of our senses. The transformative and healing power of exploring wild and natural landscapes like the Grand Canyon can be experienced, felt, and sensed. We are elated to be able to share it with the world in Street View. You may not be able to feel, smell, and touch it like we did, but experiencing it in 360 seems like a good way to start.

  Celebrating the next generation of game makers on the Google Play Store

  Today, the top five finalists of Google Play’s Change The Game Design Challenge are launching their games in the Play Store. While half of mobile game players are women, they only make up 23% of the gaming creator industry. This is what inspired Change The Game to put on a challenge that would bring the next generation of female gamer makers’ games to life. From a shape-shifting young girl navigating through the forest to an artist choosing the right color for their palette—these games were all imagined, written and developed by the winners of the Design Challenge.

  
  

  Over the past few months, the winners have worked in partnership with Girls Make Games’ development studio LearnDistrict and a team of artists, programmers and producers to build their games.

  Grand Prize Winner: Christine, 17 years old, from Vancouver, Washington

  Christine is the creator of “Mazu,” a side-scrolling platform game about a young shapeshifter’s journey through a danger-infested forest. As a long time gamer, Christine noticed early on the clear distinction between games made for girls and games made for boys. “As an aspiring artist in the gaming industry, I don’t want to repeat this cycle of gender-based pandering in the future,” says Christine. Her goal in developing a game was to create a memorable challenge that could be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of gender.

  Dakota, 14 years old, from Encino, California

  Dakota’s game, “EcoVerse,” is a series of minigames to clean, plant, and bring animal life to planets as part of the Galactic Restoration Team. “Many games center around destruction and tearing things down—what if I made a game about building things up and rebirth?” This question and a passion for living eco-consciously inspired Dakota to create “Ecoverse.”

  Lily, 14 years old, from Poplar, Wisconsin

  Lily was inspired by emotions and eyes—two windows into the soul—to create “The Other Realm,” a puzzle adventure game focused on self-identity. “The game is about looking at things through a different lens,” she says, adding that “eyes can hold emotion that you might not necessarily notice.” After being named a top five finalist, Lily is now exploring game design as a field of study to pursue.

  Erin, 18 years old, from Freehold, New Jersey

  Erin created “Symphony,” a rhythm game which explores music as a means for a young girl to connect with her deceased grandfather to showcase the healing properties of music. Erin says that through practice and love of craft “anyone can become their own self-made prodigy.” After participating in the Design Challenge, Erin is now interested in entering the gaming industry.

  
  

  Lauren, 17 years old, from Birmingham, Alabama

  Lauren’s game, “Palette,” simulates the eternal struggle of every artist: finding the right color. Reveal famous paintings throughout history by mixing different colors from a palette to match a target color. According to Lauren, “Change The Game taught me that the game industry embraces people with all interests, from musicians to programmers.” Lauren now plans on pursuing a future in game development.

  So this week our experts and engineers are taking part in an industry “hackathon” where technology companies and NGOs are coming together to collaborate and create new ways to tackle child sexual abuse online. This hackathon marks the latest milestone in our effort to fight this issue through technology, teams and partnerships over two decades.

  In 2006, we joined the Technology Coalition, partnering with other technology companies on technical solutions to tackle the proliferation of images of child exploitation. Since then, we’ve developed and shared new technologies to help organizations globally root out and stop child abuse material being shared.

  In 2008, we began using “hashes,” or unique digital fingerprints, to identify, remove and report copies of known images automatically, without humans having to review them again. In addition to receiving hashes from organizations like the Internet Watch Foundationand the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, we also add hashes of newly discovered content to a shared industry database so that other organizations can collaborate on detecting and removing these images.

  In 2013, we made changes to the Google Search algorithm to further prevent images, videos and links to child abuse material from appearing in our search results. We’ve implemented this change around the world in 40 languages. We’ve launched deterrence campaigns, including a partnership with the Lucy Faithfull Foundation in the UK, to show warning messages in response to search terms associated with child sexual abuse terms. As a result of these efforts, we’ve seen a thirteen-fold reduction in the number of child sexual abuse image-related queries in Google Search.

  In 2015, we expanded our work on hashes by introducing first-of-its-kind fingerprinting and matching technology for videos on YouTube, to scan and identify uploaded videos that contain known child sexual abuse material. This technology, CSAI Match, is unique in its resistance to manipulation and obfuscation of content, and it dramatically increases the number of violative videos that can be detected compared to previous methods. As with many of the new technologies we develop to tackle this kind of harm, we shared this technology with industry free of charge.  

  This work has been effective in stopping the spread of known CSAM content online over the years. In 2018, we announced new AI technology which steps up the fight against abusers by identifying potential new CSAM content for the first time. Our new image classifierassists human reviewers sorting through images by prioritizing the most likely CSAM content for review. It already enables us to find and report almost 100 percent more CSAM than was possible using hash matching alone, and helps reviewers to find CSAM content seven times faster.

  Since we made the new technology available for free via our Content Safety API in September, more than 200 organizations have requested to access it to support their work to protect children. Identifying and removing new images more quickly—often before they have even been viewed—means children who are being sexually abused today are more likely to be identified and protected from further abuse. It also reduces the toll on reviewers by requiring fewer people to be exposed to CSAM content.

  Because this kind of abuse can manifest through text as well as images, we recently made substantial changes to tackle predatory behavior in YouTube comments using a classifier, which surfaces for review inappropriate sexual or predatory comments on videos featuring minors. This has led to a significant reduction in violative comments this year.

  Underpinning all of this work is a deep collaboration with partners. As well as the Technology Coalition, we’re members of the Internet Watch Foundation and the WePROTECT Global Alliance, and we report any CSAM content we find to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children who in turn report to law enforcement.

  Technology, and the methods used by those who seek to exploit it, are constantly evolving and there will always be more to do to tackle this heinous crime. We are crystal clear about our responsibility to ensure our products and services offer safe experiences, and we are fully committed to protecting children from sexual exploitation.

  The internet has enabled people worldwide to connect, create and distribute new works of art like never before. A key part of preserving this creative economy is ensuring creators and artists have a way to share and make money from their content—and preventing the flow of money to those who seek to pirate that content. Today, we're releasing our latest update on those efforts..

  Our 2018 "How Google Fights Piracy" report explains the programs, policies, and technology we put in place to combat piracy online and ensure continued opportunities for creators around the world.

  We invest significantly in the technology, tools and resources that prevent copyright infringement on our platforms. We also work with others across the industry on efforts to combat piracy. These efforts appear to be having an effect: around the world, online piracy has been decreasing, while spending on legitimate content is rising across content categories.

  Here are a few of our findings from this year's Piracy report:

  • $3 billion+:The amount YouTube has paid to rights holders who have monetized use of their content in other videos through Content ID, our industry-leading rights management tool.
    
  • $100 million+: The amount we’ve invested in building Content ID, including staffing and computing resources.
    
  • $1.8 billion+:The amount YouTube paid to the music industry from October 2017 to September 2018 in advertising revenue alone
    
  • 3 billion+:The number of URLs that were removed from Search for infringing copyright since launching a submission tool for copyright owners and their agents.
    
  • 10 million+:The number of ads that were disapproved by Google in 2017 that were suspected of copyright infringement or that linked to infringing sites.
    

  
  

  As we continue our work in the years ahead, five principles guide our substantial investments in fighting piracy:

  Create more and better legitimate alternatives: Piracy often arises when it's difficult for consumers to access legitimate content. By developing products that make it easy for users to access legitimate content, like Google Play Music and YouTube, Google helps drive revenue for creative industries and give consumers choice.

  Follow the money: As the vast majority of sites dedicated to online piracy are doing so to make money, one way to combat them is to cut off their supply. We prevent actors that engage in copyright infringement from using our ads and monetization systems and we enforce these policies rigorously.

  Be efficient, effective, and scalable: We strive to implement anti-piracy solutions that work at scale. For example, as early as 2010, we began making substantial investments in streamlining the copyright removal process for search results. As a result, these improved procedures allow us to process copyright removal requests for search results at the rate of millions per week.

  Guard against abuse: Some actors will make false copyright infringement claims in order to have content they don't want online taken down. We’re committed to detecting and rejecting bogus infringement allegations, such as removals for political or competitive reasons.

  Provide transparency: We’re committed to providing transparency. In our Transparency Report, we disclose the number of requests we receive from copyright owners and governments to remove information from our services.

  Today, our services are generating more revenue for creators and rights holders, connecting more people with the content they love, and doing more to fight back against online piracy than ever before. We’re proud of the progress this report represents. Through continued innovation and partnership, we’re committed to curtailing infringement by bad actors while empowering the creative communities who make many of the things we love about the internet today.

  Can you remember what you were doing in 2003? It was a special time of questionable fashion, Nokia game obsession (Snake 2, anyone?) and The Black Eyed Peas’ “Where Is the Love?” on repeat. “Finding Nemo” was popular on the silver screen, the Concorde took its final flight and Britney Spears became the youngest singer to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

  Over in Ireland, we were trying to create something special of our own. We opened our first office in Dublin with just five employees, later moving to the perfect home on Barrow Street in the heart of Docklands (which would later be known colloquially as “Silicon Docks”). We knew we were on the edge of something exciting in those early days, but didn’t know how it would grow.

  We committed to keeping it scrappy, always bringing the “craic” (Irish for “fun”) to work and doing our best to connect with the people of Dublin. Over the years, they’ve given us so much—from working together to get computer science on the education curriculum, engaging startups, connecting something as Irish as agriculture with tech, and letting us be part of community-driven initiatives such as Dublin Pride and the South Docks Festival.

  Ireland is the second largest Google site in Europe with the biggest Engineering workforce outside of Zurich and Mountain View. We have over 8,000 people from 70 countries, speaking more than 75 languages and serving more than 2 million customers. It’s a melting pot of cultures coming together to make a difference, far beyond our Irish shores. For many, it’s their first job away from home and they consistently say the thing that keeps them here is the people. It's the people who make this city unique—and the perfect home for Google.

  We want to use our 15th birthday celebrations to give something back to Ireland. Today, we’re announcing the launch of a €1M Google.org Impact Challenge: an open call for local nonprofit and social enterprise innovators to tell us how they would make their community—and beyond—an even better place.

  We’ve invested more than €1 billion in Ireland since 2003 and we’ll continue to contribute to Dublin as we grow our business and the economy. We’ll remain good neighbors; supporting local businesses, providing jobs and using technology to solve some of the biggest problems facing society.

With many candidates, measures, and propositions on your ballot, Google tools are here to help you navigate the process, understand your choices, and view the results of races across the country.

  
  

  Navigating the process

  Whether you're registering to vote for the first time, voting absentee, or seeking directions to your local polling place, we can help you find the information you need to make your voice heard in this election. When you search for “how do I register to vote” or “how do I vote,” a box will appear on the results page with authoritative and easy-to-understand information about the deadlines, requirements, eligibility, and logistics of casting a ballot where you live. And if you aren't sure where to vote, a query for “where do I vote” will guide you to the right place.

  

  Understanding the choices

  To help you make knowledgeable decisions about your ballot, we’re making information about candidates and ballot measures readily available. If you search for any federal or gubernatorial candidate, a panel of information will appear on the results page. This will include candidate-authored statements about platforms and legislative priorities for all campaigns that have chosen to post them. Likewise, a query for any statewide ballot measure will render a panel of information and the full text for that initiative.

  

  Viewing the outcomes

  Once the polls have closed and the votes are being counted, you can come to Search to find minute-to-minute updates as the results begin to come in. A search for “Senate results” or “House results” on Election Day will give you a box with a real-time summary of each chamber, while searching for any congressional or gubernatorial contest will give you results for those specific races.

  Reach the right consumers with Display & Video 360’s Audiences module

  This is the third post in a series about Display & Video 360 innovations.

  Display & Video 360 is organized around five integrated modules that work together to simplify the end-to-end campaign process: Campaigns, Audiences, Creatives, Inventory and Insights. Today you’ll learn more about new features of the Audiences module, the destination to consolidate, build and understand your audiences for advertising, so you can better connect with the consumers you want to reach.

  Consolidate your audiences in Display & Video 360

  The Audiences module is where you can get a single view of your audiences, including Google-powered audiences and the ones you provide. Your media and analytics teams can use the Audiences module to learn more about the users you want to reach, then create new audience segments to help you reach them with relevant campaigns. You can also choose to make the segments you create available across different accounts belonging to your company thanks to the ability to link accounts.

  When it comes to helping advertisers reach specific audiences, we believe that user privacy and control come first. This is why we have strict policies in place to protect users.

  Build your audiences the way you want

  The Audiences module gives you the flexibility to create the most relevant segments for your campaigns. For example, let’s say that you’re an automotive brand planning a campaign for the launch of a new electric car. You know that a great starting point is to reach consumers who have already shown interest in your brand. This means being able to create a new audience that includes anonymous segments of consumers who interacted with an ad from a prior campaign. The activity audience builder feature lets you build audiences from a number of prior-campaign metrics, including aggregated conversions or clicks. 

  Finding the right audience involves more than just looking at those who have responded to prior advertising campaigns. For example, the auto brand might also be interested in reaching people who used the car configurator on their website or app. This audience can be easily created in Analytics 360 and then shared with Display & Video 360 in just a few clicks.
  

  The Audiences module also lets you combine multiple audiences to see the overlap. For example, the auto brand could see the overlap of segments of consumers who clicked on an ad and used the car configurator, allowing them to create a list of consumers who responded to their ads and demonstrated a higher interest in the brand through actions on their site. This ability to combine audiences from Analytics 360 or Display & Video 360 is one of the key advantages of using Google Marketing Platform, and it will help you reach the right consumers more efficiently.
  

  

  Better understand your audiences

  Your existing customers are a good starting point for determining who to reach with your campaigns, but one reason why you’re advertising is to find new customers. Display & Video 360 makes it easy to discover insights you can use to reach the consumers who are most likely to buy your products. One way is to understand which new audiences are the most similar to audiences you already care about.

  
  

  For example, you might discover that the group of people that responded best to a previous campaign share similar interests, like a passion for camping, or share similar demographics. These are valuable insights that you can use to both create more relevant messages and reach additional consumers with these same interests.

  Frequency cap across campaigns

  You can also use the same audience segments to set a frequency cap that works across multiple campaigns. If you are running two campaigns at the same time and set a frequency cap of 5, we won’t serve more than 5 ads to consumers across both campaigns, even if there is an overlap in the audience segments. As a result you’ll reach more consumers who will be happy to see fewer, more relevant ads.

  
  

  The audience frequency cap will work across your video and display campaigns, including Programmatic Guaranteed deals (currently available in beta) and open auction buys. If you use multiple Display & Video 360 accounts, frequency caps set at the audience level will work for all your campaigns across the accounts that you have linked.

  
  

  Knowing your audiences has always led to better campaign performance, because you can connect with them in a useful and timely way. The Audiences module allows you and your teams to find meaningful insights at scale and immediately activate them in your campaigns. We’re continuing to invest in advancing the audience capabilities of Display & Video 360 so you can expect more features in the future to help you reach your goals.

  Next year, the world will reach an important milestone: the 50/50 moment, when half of the world’s population will be online. Thirty years after Tim Berners-Lee invented the world wide web, it makes a huge difference in people’s lives—whether it’s the chance to access a world of information, to improve their education, develop new skills, or build new businesses.

  
  

  For all the billions of people that are already online, there are billions more who aren’t benefiting from the economic potential of the world wide web, or its wider promise—the ability to exercise fundamental human rights such as access to information and free expression.

  
  

  At Google, we’re working to expand both access and opportunity to people around the world. In India, for example, every month, more than 8 million people use Google’s public Wi-Fi program, Google Station, to get online and access job training material or educational resources. And around the world we’re working with Learning Equality to help them close the education gap caused by limitations in access to the internet.  

  
  

  Alongside this progress, advancements made in technology and the vast scale of the web present challenges, too—whether combating illegal content, preventing misuse of personal information, or ensuring that the benefits of the technology are widely shared. These challenges require thoughtful solutions, and for many years we’ve worked with governments, civil society groups, academics and our users to find the right way forward—toward a web that builds on the best in humanity and challenges the worst.

  
  

  As we approach the 50/50 moment, we support the World Wide Web Foundation’s call to create a new Contract for the Web.   Alex Valero knew he could trust his instincts. Over the years, he had followed them to law school in Spain, then Afghanistan as a UN peacekeeper, then Zaragoza, where he was a successful graphic designer for a global sports brand. It was there he received the news that would change his life: his father had died from a sudden heart attack in Granada. An only child, Alex immediately crossed the country to be with his mother, and as the weeks passed, he decided to stay.

  Granada is a small city, and Alex soon discovered that jobs were hard to find, despite his qualifications. He was hardly alone. At that time in 2016, 4.2 million people across Spain were looking for work, with levels of youth unemployment over 40 percent. Alex searched for a job for almost a year without success, so when his girlfriend suggested that he come along to a digital marketing course at the local university, Alex jumped at the chance. Together, they completed the Google Actívate program, part of the Grow with Google initiative offering free online and face-to-face courses in digital skills. More than 335,000 people have trained with Google Actívate so far, as Google pursues its commitment to help 1 million Europeans find work or grow their businesses by 2020.
  

  As he worked through the course, Alex began recognizing a trend: many of his friends told familiar stories of fruitless job applications and the struggle to make ends meet. And while out cycling one day, Alex had a brainwave: bars and restaurants often need extra staff at short notice and struggle to find them in time. What if an app could connect his unemployed friends with restaurants that need help?
  

  The idea had huge potential. Spain’s unemployed youth were an untapped workforce for the country’s huge hospitality industry, and an app that could streamline social security paperwork for employers could create opportunities for thousands of people. Alex asked his teachers at Google Actívate for advice and soon recognized the scale of the work involved in realizing the project. He had the skills to make it work, but it would be a major commitment. With no guarantee of success, was he ready to risk it?
  

  I had the idea, but not the knowledge. That’s when I discovered Google Actívate. I learned a lot from the courses – like how to start your company, understand your audience, create digital marketing campaigns and how to turn users into clients. Alex Valero

  Alex decided to trust his instincts once again. Dedicating 70 percent of his time to the new project, he applied for and won first prize in a national accelerator scheme for his new app, BuscoExtra. That’s when things really started to move fast, with awards from the University of Malaga and Vodafone quickly following.

  As momentum grew, Alex put everything he'd learned from Google Activate into practice, setting up a digital marketing campaign and bringing in 20 percent of the company’s first clients with his newly-learned SEO skills.
  

  Today, more than 15,300 people across the country use BuscoExtra to find work, and over 1,000 businesses use the app to advertise positions for employees to fill. BuscoExtra is also expanding, with the team set to grow from 14 to more than 25 employees. In 2019, Alex is aiming even higher, with the goal of facilitating one million hours of work through the app. Using the skills he's acquired with Activate, Alex has not only built a career for himself but is now also able to help others find work through BuscoExtra.

  To show you some of the features on the new Pixel 3 phone, we created Sights of Sound powered by YouTube Music, an immersive pop-up experience coming to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin, Miami and Atlanta this fall.

  Visitors step inside rooms inspired by four musicians and use a Pixel 3 to navigate, capture and share the experience. To bring each room to life, you’ll need to solve a puzzle using Google Lens, the visual tool that lets you search what you see. Throughout the pop-up, you and your friends can try out Pixel’s brilliant camera by using Group Selfie Cam, Top Shot and Photobooth Mode.
  

  We collaborated with Ella Mai, Future, J Balvin and Marshmello to create each immersive space in the pop-up. Dive deep into Ella Mai’s Inner Reflections, sit like royalty among snakes and nine-foot tall golden lions in Future’s Trap Mansion, dance your way through J Balvin’s Reggaeton World, bounce your troubles away in Marshmello’s Happier Place and capture it all on the Pixel 3’s incredible camera.

  My grandmother served during WWII and when I was growing up she told me stories about how proud she was to be in the military. I wanted to follow in her footsteps and serve my country, too, so I joined the Air Force Reserves in 2004. My unit was deployed to Afghanistan in 2007 and the experience took a toll on my nervous system. I eventually found yoga, which gave me the tools I needed to process and move through stressful feelings in a healthier way. When I finished my service obligation in 2012, I wanted to share the healing power of yoga with other members of the military, and create a place that had a strong sense of community.

  
  

  When I opened Honest Soul Yoga, I quickly realized that a clear, accurate and attractive online location listing for our business was imperative. Quite simply, it’s how people show up at our door. So I turned to Google for help. Products like Google Ads and Google My Business connect me with people who are looking for yoga studios in my area. Before using Google tools we had a phone at the front desk, but it rarely rang. Now, we get several calls an hour! Every call is an opportunity to get a new member through our doors.

  
  

  Being a veteran-owned business is a big part of Honest Soul Yoga’s identity. We understand the challenges of frequently moving to new cities, being away from family, or having family away for extended periods of time. We appreciate those sacrifices and try to provide a place to connect with the community and meet new people.   We’ve always had big plans for this small business, and we’re grateful for our growth, which includes our second location that opened last month and our third location opening before the new year. Today we’ll explore new features of the Campaigns module: your starting point to plan, execute, and optimize cross-channel media buys.

  Streamline media planning

  Every campaign requires a well-developed media plan. But with all the media environments available today, across video, display, audio, and more, finding the right placements can be challenging and time-consuming. This is why we introduced the Plan tool (currently in beta), a brand new workspace in the Campaigns module designed for media planners. It allows them to experiment with potential inventory and buying strategies, so they can explore different approaches before setting the campaigns live.

  Planners start by specifying their campaign budget, goals, and dates. Based on this information, they can discover publishers with inventory and audiences that meet their objectives, accurately forecast reach, and easily send RFPs. Planners can also add private deals that they have previously negotiated or explore new open auction strategies.

  To ensure that a media plan will actually deliver on campaign goals, planners also need a way to estimate performance, including reach, frequency, GRPs and more. Your team can quickly get these metrics, deduplicated across devices, with reach planning, built-in to the Plan tool. This information helps you make sure you’re correctly allocating budget across different tactics.

  We’re working to expand the capabilities of the Campaigns module, including the Plan tool. For example, early next year we will make it easier for planners to collaborate and share media plans with other internal and external teams.   Automated bidding in Display & Video 360 also protects you from overpaying by analyzing auction dynamics (e.g., first, second price or hybrid auctions) and evaluating how they impact the likelihood of winning an impression.

  When you have multiple campaigns running at the same time, your media team can use the combined view in the Campaigns module to get a unified and actionable view of all of the components of each campaign.

  

  The combined view gives your teams easy access to each campaign component

  The combined view allows your team to drill down and explore campaigns in great detail, from insertion orders to line items to individual creatives, so it’s easy to see which creative is associated to which line item. The combined view table also surfaces key stats and information for each entity in the table, helping troubleshoot campaigns and quickly identifying if anything requires your team’s attention.

  While the combined view gives you a complete snapshot of all your campaigns, your media team doesn’t always have the time to go through every line to find out if a specific campaign is under performing. That’s why we built the Intelligence Panel, which automatically notifies your team about issues and provides optimization recommendations for campaigns without requiring any manual report pulls. And since the insights are paired with actionable next steps, your media team can quickly make the changes to improve performance before they miss the opportunity. To be even more useful, the alerts are ranked based on the predicted impact they’ll have. For example, an alert for a campaign that has no approved creatives--and therefore won't run--will rank higher than an alert for a campaign that is projected to slightly underspend.
